bertmBert Montgomery has served as pastor of University Baptist Church since August 2008. Previously, he served as pastor of Campbellsburg Baptist Church, Campbellsburg, KY, for four years.

In addition to his work as the bivocational pastor of UBC, Bert lectures as an adjunct instructor in both the Sociology and the Philosophy & Religion Departments at Mississippi State University. He also writes regularly for The Faith Lab and the Commercial Dispatch newspaper. In 2008, Smyth & Helwys published his first book, Elvis, Willie, Jesus & Me: The Musings and Mutterings of a Church Misfit. He has had the opportunities to interview legendary folksinger Arlo Guthrie, members of the Allman Brothers and Derek Trucks Bands, and even the deceased monk Thomas Merton (for the Wittenburg Door magazine).

Bert is a graduate of the Baptist Seminary of Kentucky (M.Div., 2007), Mississippi College (M.S., 1993), and Union University (B.A., 1990). He was born in New Orleans and has lived in Memphis – which he considers to be the southernmost and northernmost cities in Mississippi. His hobbies are listening to good music, reading good books, watching Tim Burton movies, spending time with family and friends, loving all things related to Mississippi State (especially the Famous Maroon Band), and occasionally pretending to play the trombone.

Bert is married to the former Jency Hicks of Jackson, TN; in 2009, they celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary.  They have two teenaged sons, Rob and Daniel.
